Amazon is taking voice ordering to the next level with a major upgrade to Amazon and its AI-powered assistant, Alexa+. Subscribers can now order restaurant delivery from Grubhub and Uber Eats using natural conversation through Alexa+, creating a smoother and more personalized food ordering experience.
Instead of the old-style “command and response” interaction, Alexa+ now works more like speaking with a server at a restaurant. Customers can ask questions, browse restaurants, customize meals, change quantities, swap menu items, and even change their minds during the conversation without restarting the process.
According to Amazon, users can simply say things like:
“Order Italian food for delivery”
“Show me burgers nearby”
“Add fries to my order”
“What desserts do they have?”
“Alexa, where’s my food?”
Alexa+ handles the conversation naturally while updating the order in real time on supported Echo Show devices.
This new feature is currently rolling out to Alexa+ customers using Echo Show 8 devices and larger smart displays. Customers first link their Grubhub or Uber Eats accounts through the Alexa app, and past orders automatically sync for quick reordering.
For restaurants, this could become another important channel for customer discovery and ordering. Instead of customers scrolling endlessly through apps, AI assistants may increasingly guide diners directly to restaurants through conversational recommendations. Grubhub executives described the experience as “restaurant discovery and ordering into one seamless, conversational experience.”
This development also highlights how artificial intelligence is changing the future of online ordering. Amazon’s goal is to make Alexa+ adapt dynamically depending on the task being performed, whether that’s ordering dinner, planning travel, or shopping online.
For restaurant owners and operators, this shift reinforces the importance of:
Maintaining accurate online menus
Optimizing delivery platform listings
Using strong food descriptions and photos
Building visibility across Grubhub, Uber Eats, and other digital ordering channels
Preparing for AI-driven restaurant discovery
As AI assistants become more integrated into everyday consumer behavior, restaurants that optimize their digital presence may gain a competitive advantage in how customers discover and order food.
Amazon says this conversational ordering system is only the beginning of a larger vision for AI-powered commerce and customer interaction.
